The Broward County Athletic Association Track Championship serves as a launching pad to the state tournament, and Saturday a number of top athletes showed they are ready to contend for titles in the coming weeks.

Some were expected, such as the St. Thomas Aquinas boys and Boyd Anderson girls, who repeated as team champions. Established standouts, such as St.Thomas’ Arman Hall and Boyd Anderson’s Shayla Sanders, predictably dominated their events at the Dillard High track.

Hall, who has the nation’s best times in the 200 and 400 dashes, won his specialties, and neither was close. The Raiders junior cruised well ahead of the pack in the 400 in 46.61 and the 200 in 21.17, then anchored the winning 4×400 relay.

Asked if he feels like he is running against himself most of the time, Hall said, “Yeah, kind of. Sometimes that’s what you’ve got to do. I just have to get better and better. It doesn’t mean anything till state comes around. You need to become a state champion.”

B.A.’s Sanders, also a junior, set a personal best while leading a 1-2-3 Cobras sweep in the 100 in 10.57. Kali Davis-White and Comfort Gebor were close behind as the Cobras quickly took charge of the girls meet. Sanders looked even stronger in running away with the 200 in 23.69, just missing her previous best.

“I feel good about the PR in the 100. I didn’t know I was able to do that,” she said.

There were bigger surprises, none more than Northeast’s Volvick Vassor, who came with a chip on his shoulder and a vision. He felt like he and his team were an afterthought. But when he zoomed by favored Phillip Dorsett, of St. Thomas, to win the 100 in 10.64, he was doing what he had been envisioning for more than a week.

“Everybody always says they can beat Northeast, that we’re the easiest team. They got it wrong this time. I’m the best, I’m No. 1,” said Vassor, whose time is tied for 10th best in the state. “I came to win.”

Dillard junior Jamika Glades pulled off an impressive double in the girls hurdles over accomplished senior opponents. Her 14.22 in the 100 hurdles was more than a second faster than she had run before Saturday.

“I’ve been practicing being aggressive, running the whole race aggressive. That’s what the coach told me I had to do,” Glades said.

The 4×100 relay in this meet has often been a precursor to state supremacy, as Broward has produced the past three 4A boys champs. Flanagan took the title Saturday in 41.48, edging South Broward with a foursome of Corey Jones, Omar McBean, Jermy Smith and Demetris Ates.

“It means a lot because we practice so hard every day. We never lost sight of the goal, which was to be the best. And we proved it today,” Ates said.

Freshman Manny Velasquez of Douglas impressed with a commanding performance in the 3,200 in 10:06.23.

The Ely boys built an early lead in the field events with Cyrus Johnson winning the triple jump (45-9 1/2) and high jump (6-4).

Nova junior Monique Griffiths set personal bests in winning the discus (130-10) and placing third in the shot put (36-11). She just started competing in the throws last year. It wasn’t until the finals that she learned she was competing against a state champion.

Defending 3A shot put champ Sasha-Ann Lebert won the shot (41-6 1/4) and was fourth in the discus.

“Today was definitely an eye-opener,” said Griffiths. “It’s an honor, actually, to be competing against people that a few years ago I never thought I could beat.”

Chandler junior Jasmine Todd went from exultation to frustration Saturday at the 71st Chandler Rotary Track and Field Invitational at Austin Field.

Arizona high school track and field – 2011

A little after setting a state record in the triple jump with a second-to-last leap of 41 feet, 5 inches, Todd won the 100 meters in 11.73 seconds. But she quickly reached for the back of her leg as she crossed the finish line.

A strained hamstring ended her night. She had to pull out of the long jump and coach Eric Richardson held her out of the sprint relay.

“I think it was a low strain,” he said. “We’ll get it evaluated on Monday and go from there.

“I’m just glad that it didn’t really pull bad. I think we’re going to be OK.”

After winning the 100, Todd said she thought she would be OK and didn’t feel it was serious.

“It’s not my jumping leg,” she said.

Todd, named the meet’s outstanding girls field-events competitor, broke the triple-jump record of 40-11, set in 2002 by Nina Henson of Tucson Sahuaro. That same year, Henson set the Chandler Rotary record at 39-4 that Todd also broke Saturday.

“I didn’t know what the record was when I did it,” Todd said. “I was just jumping to jump today.”

Peoria Liberty’s Ashley Kealamakia won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 13.78 seconds and was named the meet’s outstanding girls track performer.

Tuba City runner Billy Orman was named the meet’s outstanding boys track athlete. He captured the 1,600 and 3,200. He won the 3,200 in a meet-record time of 9:7.25.

Phoenix Desert Vista jumper Edmund Baker was named the outstanding boys field event athlete for his high jump victory leap of 6 feet, 10 inches.

Glendale Deer Valley junior Trae Armstrong, who used to get dusted by Scottsdale Chaparral junior Davonte Neal in the eighth grade, got back at him with victories in the boys 100 and 200. Neal finished second in both. Neal shared second place in the 100 with Mesa Mountain View’s Carter Brown at 10.80 seconds. Armstrong won in 10.66.

The closer race was the 200, where Neal led until the final 20 meters, when Armstrong surged ahead and finished in 21.44 seconds. Neal came in at 21.48.

Neal, the state’s Big Schools Player of the Year in football, still is shaking off the rust of not running track last year when he made the transition from Laveen Cesar Chavez to Chaparral.

“I always lost to him when I was little,” said Armstrong, the defending Class 5A Division II champion in the 100 and 200. “I still want to get better, run faster.”

Orman, who will attend Harvard, also won the Mile Split-sponsored mile, which was part of the 1,600.

Orman, whose better race is the 3,200, won the 1,600 in 4:12.05 4 seconds faster than runner-up Alejandro Montano of Tucson Catalina Magnet.

Chandler senior Hannah Carson won the discus (138 feet, 1 inch), shot put (45-6) and the high jump (5-8).

Jeremy Tuttle of Sierra Vista Buena won the boys discus at 174-4.

Oro Valley Canyon del Oro junior Jaide Stepter, who came into the meet with the nation’s fastest time in the 300 hurdles, won in 44.06, off her national-best 43.32.
