Season highlights: Jurko was a key part of the Mavericks squad rather than the team’s main weapon as he was at Cypress Bay last year. Jurko had 71 kills in three state tournament matches, including the championship match where McCarthy (29-1) came within one set of winning a state title. “T.J. can take over a match at anytime,” Bishop Moore coach Tom Snodgrass said after losing to the Mavericks in a state semifinal. “All you can do is try to slow him down.” Jurko plans to play Division I volleyball at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, N.J.
Athlete’s quote: “I think with McCarthy we had such great players at every position, so they didn’t depend on me as much and they took a lot of the burden off of myself and I was able to worry less. I wanted to win states, but we got close enough, second place is nothing to be ashamed of. I can say I’m pleased with the season we had. This whole year was basically a blessing, we had a great run.”
